The Art of Style
Here I am. This is me. This is my story.
Here I am. This is me. This is my story.
One of our favorite ways to express ourselves is through our style. And by style we mean appearance, attitude and lifestyle; how we present ourselves to the world. Our unique style helps tell our story and express our beliefs. It’s how we say, Here I am. This is me. This is my story.
Our style is often the first thing that people notice about us, and how we make a first impression. When we move through the world empowered by our style, it shows we know ourselves and what we like, and exudes a vulnerable confidence that opens us up to moments of connection.
How we dress and move through the day is a brave act of visibly sharing something about ourselves, without being asked. We’re literally wearing our heart on our sleeve. So, the next time someone stops you and says, I love your style, graciously explore it, they’re connecting with you and what you’re sharing.
The most powerful story we can tell is our own. So let’s dive into how to tell our story through style with a few exercises:
Choose two to three style words. These should capture you and help you build your style. Don’t be afraid to build in a little creative tension between your words to spice things up, like casual elegance, modern vintage, classic vibrance.
To help define your style words, answer these questions:
- If I could only wear one look for the rest of my life, what would it be?
- I feel most confident in…
- What are my favorite fabrics, patterns, textures?
- Do I have multiple versions of certain items?
- What colors am I drawn to?
- Which public figure’s style do I resonate with and what words describe their reputation?Define a personal color palette. When everything complements each other, the ease of putting an outfit together makes getting dressed so much more fun. Plus, there are so many more opportunities to mix and match.
Make moodboards. Search your style words on Pinterest to make boards of what you like, what you could see yourself wearing, and what you’d love to wear if budget and confidence were not holding you back. Be bold, this is where you dream and manifest! And it’s a great tool to reference when you’re shopping and getting sucked into trends, stick to your style.
Explore your closet. Make sure your clothes align with your lifestyle. Pull out items that you love but feel like they are only special occasion pieces and wear them. Pair that sequin skirt with a graphic tee and bring the party!
Donate clothes that no longer feel like you. If it doesn’t make you feel comfortable and confident, it’s gotta go. We evolve and grow every day, your style does too.
Try a clothing rental subscription. We love this because you can try out different looks and fits without buying into them. We’ve been loving Nuuly. Check out our summer lookbook!
It’s always a good time to be yourself. The act of expressing ourselves strengthens our creative muscle and opens up our mind to imagining alternate versions of ourselves. You know how they say, dress for the part you want? That’s a total power move. It’s too easy to let our negative self-talk rule us in front of the mirror, instead, find the joy and empowerment in getting dressed each day and sharing your uniqueness with the world. You are loved, you matter and you are worthy!
